Founded in 1985, the DC Public Library Foundation adds a margin of excellence to the DC Public Library System by providing programs, services, and materials not otherwise available to the library, with a special emphasis on children and literacy.

The Foundation addresses six focus areas: 1) Library Collections; 2) Learning Opportunities for Children and Adults; 3) Facility Improvements; 4) Access to Technology; 5) Cultural Events; and 6) Library Service Capacity. The Foundation supports the Library Summer Reading Program, supports Preschool Reading Clubs; and administers “Be a Champion of Children’s Reading”.

The Foundation has enhanced children’s spaces in 5 libraries and created a state-of-the-art “Teen Scene” at the central library. Providing cultural opportunities, the Foundation provides a library chess league for teens, provides family-friendly opera at all branch libraries, and provides scholarships for disadvantaged students to take the GED exam free of charge. It serves over 3,000 children in these programs.

The Foundation’s Preschool Reading Clubs operate at all 25 branch libraries and conduct sessions for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and their caregivers. Parents of infants and toddlers learn the importance of reading to very young children and how to spark an interest in stories and words. The Foundation has served over 120 families and aims for more in 2010.

The M100 Foundation is proud to award $1,000 to DC Public Library Foundation to help fund the Preschool Reading Clubs.

The M100 Foundation is pleased to announce the twenty-third $1,000 grant recipient of the M100 Foundation 30/30 Initiative: Family Matters of Greater Washington

Family Matters of Greater Washington was founded in 1882 and is one of the oldest, nationally accredited social service organizations in the Washington metro area. Through its services, Family Matters has revolutionized a number of programs in the greater DC community, such as the first District of Columbia Boy’s Club (1901); the first summer camp for African-American mothers and children (1907); the first day care program for children of working parents (WWII); the first assembled family foster homes (1963); the city’s first multi-services senior center (1969); D.C.’s first weekend respite program for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers (1986); and the first free adoption resource center for families in all stages of adoption in the District (2003).

Today, Family Matters provides assistance to more than 12,000 children, youth, families and seniors each year. Their programs include affordable childcare; therapeutic and traditional foster care; youth development programs; mental health/counseling services; and services for seniors.

In its adoption and foster care program, each child is placed in a loving and supportive foster home. The goal is to find a permanent placement for a child within fifteen months of entering the system.

The M100 Foundation is proud to award Family Matters of Greater Washington $1,000 for its foster and adoptive care services.

The M100 Foundation is pleased to announce the twenty-second $1,000 grant recipient of the M100 Foundation 30/30 Initiative: The Generation Project

The Generation Project is an educational philanthropy that allows donors to become actively involved in their giving. The Project’s goals are to generate ideas to benefit low income K to 12 students, generate new philanthropists by actively involving donors in the giving process, and empowering the next generation by harnessing the ingenuity of individuals to improve educational opportunities.

The Generation Project encourages donors to share their passions, priorities and expertise with low-income students by allowing the donors to identify how the donated money is to be used. This allows donors to have greater involvement for educational initiatives at low-income schools. Through this initiative, The Generation Project hopes to draw young donors into educational philanthropy.

To celebrate the start of the 2010-2011 school year, The Generation Project is launching a campaign where it has set aside $20,000 that it won in the Chase Community Giving challenge, and will use to double the impact that its donors want to see. For example, M100’s $1000 grant to buy SAT books for low-income students will trigger The Generation Project to put an identical gift in place. This identical gift is at no cost to M100 or any other donor. In essence, the impact of M100’s $1000 grant is doubled and twice as many kids benefit from the donation.

The M100 Foundation is proud to award $1,000 to The Generation Project to help supply SAT books to low-income students.

The M100 Foundation is pleased to announce the twenty-first $1,000 grant recipient of the M100 Foundation 30/30 Initiative: Jews United For Justice

Jews United For Justice (JUFJ) is a Washington area Jewish organization that pursues justice and equality for the local community.

JUFJ runs many programs. One of its programs is the Jeremiah Fellowship program, which seeks to educate and train a select cohort of young adults to become the next generation of social justice change makers.

The Jeremiah Fellowship impacts the DC Metro area by training Fellows to become crucial volunteer leaders in local organizations that are improving the lives of people in the DC area. Each fellow commits to taking on a major volunteer project as a culmination of the program. Several of this year’s Fellows have committed to work with JUFJ to protect the rights of immigrant workers, preserve affordable housing, and maintain crucial social safety net services across the region.

Other fellows are planning to work to improve the working conditions of DC’s restaurant workers, hold a candidate forum to encourage Ward 6 DC City Council members to focus on poverty and affordable housing, and work with other area nonprofit organizations to increase their capacity. With their increased experience and knowledge, their renewed commitment to work for change, and the relationships that they have build during the fellowship, the work of the Fellows will multiply out into the community during the final project and into the future.

The M100 Foundation is proud to award $1,000 to Jews United For Justice to help with the Jeremiah Fellowship Project.
